Forced to lineout with only five members of their Championship side, the Brian Dillons Junior (B) Hurlers surrendered their City Division Junior (2) Hurling League title when they were well beaten, 2-16 to 0-7, by Mayfield, in the semi-final of this years competition, in Ballinlough on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, 28th October,2013. One must have a great deal of sympathy for Team Manager, Anthony O"Sullivan, after this game ,for it must have been soul destroying to have been let down by so many players failing to make an appearance for this important game. Ok, some players had genuine reasons for their absence, but, many choose the socialising in the Jazz to turning out to play with their club in such an important game. The players that played could not be faulted for their efforts, particularly in the first half, but, in the end, they just were not strong enough for a Mayfield side that had recently won the (B) Hurling Championship. Played in cold, wintry conditions with a strong breeze and frequent heavy rain showers, Brian Dillons had the advantage of the breeze in the opening half and were competing well and were leading 0-6 to 0-3 after twenty minutes play. However, they were struck a deadly blow after twenty five minutes when Mayfield goaled after Mark Kelly, in the Brian Dillons goal had saved well the first attempt, only to have the rebound finished to the net.. At half-time it was 1-5 to 0-6 in Mayfields favour and Brian Dillons had a mountain to climb as they now had to face the elements in the second half. Tommy Triggs had the opening point in the third minute of the second half to narrow the gap to the minimum and the Brian Dillons players battled hard for the opening quarter but were eventually overrun in the final fifteen minutes. However, when you consider that only James Varian, Derek McDonnell (not fully recovered from a recent injury, Darren McGrath, Dave Cremin, and Edmund Hussey were the only Brian Dillons players that played in the 0-16 to 1-11 loss to Mayfield in the Championship semi-final ,back in August, it was always going to be a huge task to win on this occasion. However, several of the Brian Dillons team can look back on this game with satisfaction, particularly Mark Kelly, a splendid goalkeeper, James Varian, until his dismissal after 50 minutes, Ken McCarthy, Darren McGrath, Tommy Triggs, impeccable at free taking, Eoin Hennessy and Stephen Coughlan. Scorers for Brian Dillons were; Tommy Triggs 0-6 (frees) and Kieran Delaney,0-1; The Brian Dillons team lined out as follows; Mark Kelly; Ciarain Kelleher; Derek McDonnell; James Varian; Luke O"Connell; Ken McCarthy; Darrern McGrath; Dave Cremin; Edmund Hussey; Eoin Hennessy; Tommy Triggs; Seanie O"Dwyer; Stephen Coughlan; Kieran Delaney; and Jamie O"Connor; Subs; John Shek for Seanie O"Dwyer (injured, 10 mins.) and John Kenny for Jamie O"Connor (injured, 45 mins.). |
