The Brian Dillons under-21 Hurling team bowed out of the City Division Under-21 Hurling Championship when they were narrowly beaten, 2-10 to 0-14, at the Ballinlough venue ,on Friday evening, 8th August, 2014. This was a most disappointing defeat for the Brian Dillons side ,of which much was expected, but the lack of penetration in their attack, in which only two forwards scored, was the main reason why they lost. After a bright opening which saw centre -forward, Shane Maher, slotting over a point in less than thirty seconds, the Brian Dillons team were rocked when Na Piarsaigh scored their first goal ,after three minutes play.. The gap was increased to three points when Na Piarsaigh pointed a free ,after seven minutes, and after a few terrible wides, Brian Dillons appeared to be settling when Kevin Varian tapped over two points, one from a free which left them trailing by the minimum, 1-1 to 0-3, after thirteen minutes play.. Another Na Piarsaigh point was followed by a similar effort from Shane Maher, who was hurling very well, for Brian Dillons.. 1-2 to 0-4 to Na Piarsaigh after fourteen minutes. Three minutes later, Brian Dillons were dealt a real body blow when Na Piarsaigh struck for their second goal...2-2 to 0-4.. The closing ten minutes of the opening half saw both teams score four points each with the Brian Dillons scores coming off the stick of Kevin Varian (three from frees), which left Na Piarsaigh leading by four points, 2-6 to 0-8, at half-time. Brian Dillons must have felt confident of victory as they now had the advantage of a strong breeze behind them in the second half. The second half began with the Brian Dillons attack, once again. wasting some scoreable opportunities with some dreadful wide balls, while the more economic Na Piarsaigh forward division added two further points, in their first two attacks, which was followed by a point ,from Brian Dillons excellent midfielder, Darragh Brosnan... 2-8 to 0-9 after five minutes after the restart. It was noticeable , as the second half progressed, that the Brian Dillons forwards were finding it extremely difficult to penetrate the Na Piarsaigh defence and it was left to midfielder, Darragh Brosnan, to score four of their six points, in this half with the other two coming from Kevin Varian frees. Na Piarsaigh maintained their lead with two points from frees, which gave them victory by the same margin at the end. Some dreadful shooting from Brian Dillons, brought their total of wide balls to a staggering sixteen, which ultimately, cost them victory.
