A truly amazing comeback by the Brian Dillons Junior (B) Hurling team carried them to a thrilling, 3-15 to 4-9, victory over Mayfield in the City Division Junior (2) Hurling League, which was played, under ideal conditions, out in Pairc Diolunaigh, on Wednesday evening, 16th July, 2014. The opening half of this game saw Brian Dillons struggling to get to grips with the play and they were punished by a Mayfield side ,who were well on top in most sectors of the field. Goals in the eleventh, twelveth, twentieth and twenty-ninth minutes of the first half hour propelled Mayfield to a comprehensive ,4-7 to 0-5, interval lead. Whatever the Brian Dillons Management team of Tommy Boland, Ger Allen, John O"Herlihy and Maurice Browne said to their players at the half time break, certainly had the desired effect as they were a completely different team in the second half. Midfielders, Niall Fahy and Luke O"Connell, began to dominate and with the outstanding half back trio of James O"Shea, Darren McGrath and Dylan O"Donoghue (who had switched from midfield late in the first half) completely blotting out the threat from the Mayfield forwards, the Brian Dillons attack laid siege on the Mayfield defence and the scores began to flow.. Kevin Varian led the charge when he stroked over a point from a "65 after three minutes of the second half, and this was quickly followed by a Stephen Kelly goal , one minute later. A point from James Murphy followed ,after eight minutes, and when Kevin Varian careered through the Mayfield defence and planted the ball in the back of the net, the Brian Dillons fightback was well and truly on the way....2-7 to 4-7, with twenty minutes remaining. Further points followed from Kevin Varian (five) and a massive stroke from James O"Shea had Brian Dillons on level terms, 2-13 to 4-7, with two minutes of normal time left. One minute later, Brian Dillons were in the lead when half-back, Dylan O"Donoghue, stroked over a mighty long range point... 2-14 to 4-7. In the first minute of additional time, the hard working Brian Dillons full-forward, James Murphy, was rewarded for his grafting when he finished the ball to the net, which pushed his team four points up...3-14 to 4-7. Mayfield managed to get their first score of the second half, when they pointed in the second minute of added time but, however, Brian Dillons were four points ahead again, when, substitute, James Horgan, tapped over another point, in the third minute of additional time. With the referee allowing over six minutes of additional time, Mayfield closed the scoring when they pointed a "65, one minute from the end. A stunning second half comeback from Brian Dillons had earned them a great victory.
