Besides players unavailable due to injuries and work committments, the Brian Dillons Junior (B) Hurling team were further depleted for their City Division Junior (2) Hurling League game against Mayfield, on Tuesday,3rd June, 2014, when the Brian Dillons Junior (A) Footballers, in preparation for their Championship game on 14th June, arranged a Challenge game ,on the same evening, which deprived the (B) Hurlers of another eight players. In the end, Brian Dillons put up a brave performance against Mayfield before going under by 1-16 to 0-12. On a miserable night for Hurling,in which persistent rain fell throughout the game ,making the Mayfield pitch extremely greasy which made controlled hurling difficult. Brian Dillons played with the advantage of a stiff breeze in the opening half and raced into an 0-3 to nil lead, after six minutes play, thanks to the accuracy of Kevin Varian, who was, once again, in superb form in the half forward line. Mayfield were finding scoring difficult ,at the other end due to the tenacious tackling of the Brian Dillons full-back line of Eoin Hennessy, who had another outstanding game, Derek McDonnell and Ciarain Kelleher. However, two points from frees, left Mayfield trailing by just one point, 0-3 to 0-2, after ten minutes play..Brian Dillons increased their lead to five points, with four splendid scores from Dylan O"Donoghue, Michael Colohan and two more from Kevin Varian, which left the score reading 0-7 to 0-2, after twenty minutes play. Brian Dillons failed to score during the closing ten minutes of the first half, despite getting many opportunities, while Mayfield added four points, which left the half-time score reading, Brian Dillons (B), 0-7; Mayfield, 0-6. Playing against the breeze, in the second half, it was always going to be difficult for Brian Dillons,but, however, they produced a brave performance and with fifteen minutes left in the game, they were still on level terms at 0-10 each.. Mayfield took the lead with a point ,one minute later, and when they pounced for their goal, with ten minutes remaining, there was going to be only one result.They outscored the tiring Brian Dillons team by 0-6 to 0-2, in the final ten minutes and, at the final whistle, they were ahead by seven points, 1-16 to 0-12.
