In what was a horrendous night for football, the Brian Dillons Minor Footballers recorded a 4-7 to 1-9 victory over Crosshaven ,in the Rebel Og County Minor Football League, which was played in Crosshaven on Monday evening, 15th April, 2013. Gale force winds coupled with torrential rain persisted throughout this game and, in retrospect, it probably should have been called off. However, Brian Dillons will be happy with the result as it maintains their unbeaten run in this competition. Crosshaven played with the advantage of the elements in the opening half and after five minutes play they had raced in to a 1-5 to nil lead and things were not looking good for Brian Dillons. However, the Brian Dillons players soon got to grips with the elements with their defence holding Crosshaven to just three further points in the first half and with midfielders, Mark Kelly and Brian Manning, gaining plenty of possession, the forwards saw plenty of the ball in the closing stages of the half. In one such attack, Eric O"Donoghue was hauled down inside the parallelogram, and from the resultant penalty kick, Mark Kelly rattled the back of the net for the opening score for Brian Dillons after 20 minutes. A fine point, scored by Eric O"Donoghue, five minutes later, left the half -time score reading, Brian Dillons, 1-1; Crosshaven, 1-8. With the gale behind them in the second half, Brian Dillons set about their business in convincing fashion, scoring three points in the opening five minutes. With Darren McGrath in total control at centre half back, and with James Bradfield, Andrew White and Brian Manning putting enormous pressure on the Crosshaven defence, it was not long before the Brian Dillons side took the lead. Goals by Keith Nugent, James Bradfield and Adam Cotter followed and at the finish, Brian Dillons were winners on a 4-7 to 1-9 scoreline. Credit is due to the players on both sides for their efforts on such a horrible night....weatherwise. Scorers for Brian Dillons were; James Bradfield, 1-1 (frees); Eric O"Donoghue,0-3; Mark Kelly, 1-0 (pen.); Keith Nugent, 1-0; Adam Cotter,1-0; Brian Manning,0-2; and Darren McGrath,0-1; Its back to the Hurling League for Brian Dillons, on next Thursday evening, 18th April, with St. Vincents providing the opposition at Pairc Uinsinn with a 7.00pm throw-in. |
