Junior (C) Footballers In Exciting Championship Draw With Delanys.

posted 26 Jul 2012, 17:07 by Willie Horgan
                         After a most exciting tussle in Ballinlough on Thursday evening,26th July,2012, the Brian Dillons third choice footballers finished level, 3-7 each, with Delanys second string in the City Division Junior (C) Football Championship.
                         Similar to what happened when both club"s first choice teams met in the Junior (A) Football Championship on the previous Sunday , a late goal ,again, levelled this game. The only difference on this occasion was that it was the Delanys side who scored the late equaliser.
                     Considering that Brian Dillons did not enter the Junior (3) Football League this year, and that this was their first game of the season, this was a most creditable performance and they were most unlucky not to emerge as winners. In fact they were leading by 3-7 to 2-7,
as the game entered its final minute.and were in possession of the ball in the Delanys defence. However, a lapse in concentration led to Delanys winning back the ball which they moved quickly up field and ended up in the net for the levelling score.
                   Brian Dillons opened brightly and after ten minutes play they had raced into a 1-2 to nil lead with the goal coming from full-forward,
Andrew Daly after a great pass from Ciarain Kelleher. Delanys opened their account after eleven minutes when they goaled from the penalty spot and the remainder of the first-half proved to be most exciting . Brian Dillons got their second goal after seventeen minutes when Dave O"
Donoghue netted which helped his team to lead by 2-4 to 1-6 at the interval.
                The Brian Dillons lead was increased in the seventh minute of the second-half when Andrew Daly scored his second goal and they looked likely winners mid-way through the half when they had forged into a 3-6 to 1-7 lead. Delanys were awarded a 13 metre free in the 49th minute and,with the Brian Dillons defenders disputing the decision with the referee, the Delanys freetaker took the opportunity to kick the ball into an empty net ,which reduced the Brian Dillons lead to two points.. A Dave O"Donoghue point increased the lead to three points ,in the 52nd minute, and with no further scores as the game entered its final minute,it looked like Brian Dillons had weathered the storm. Then came the late,late Delanys goal which sent the game to a replay,which will be played on next Monday evening,30th July,2012 at the same venue with a 7.15pm throw -in.
             Scorers for Brian Dillons were ; Dave O"Donoghue,1-3 (0-1 free); Andrew Daly,2-0;Kevin Varian,0-2; Mark Kelly,0-1; and Adam O" Halloran,0-1;
             The Brian Dillons team lined out as follows; (1) Paul McCarthy; (2) Paul Horgan;(3) Sean Kelly; (4) Donal Schek; (5) Eoin Keane;
