The Brian Dillons Junior (B) Hurlers had their second victory within three days when they recorded an impressive, 2-16 to 2-9, win over Rathpeacon in the City Division Junior (2) Hurling League at sunny Pairc Diolunaigh on Friday evening, 31st May, 2013. Thus, they have gone four points clear at the top of the League table and are well on course to retain the title, which they won last season. On an ideal evening for Hurling and played on the beautifully manicured sod of Pairc Diolunaigh, Fridays game produced an hour of splendid, crisp hurling .Rathpeacon played with the advantage of a stiff breeze in the opening half but were never able to build up a lead, due to the brilliance of the Brian Dillons defence in which Ciarain Kelleher, James Varian, Dylan O"Donoghue and Dave Cremin, in particular, were outstanding. The sides were level, 0-6 each, after twenty seven minutes of the first half, when, like they did against St.Vincents on the previous Tuesday, Brian Dillons finished the half with some quick points to lead, 0-8 to 0-6, at the interval. Both teams traded points in the opening quarter of the second half at which stage Brian Dillons still held a two point lead, 0-10 to 0-8. Rathpeacon rocked Brian Dillons in the sixteenth minute of the half when they goaled from a 20 metre free to put them into the lead, 1-8 to 0-10. Brian Dillons were quick to recover from this setback and with five unanswered points in as many minutes ,they were back in the ascendancy when they led 0-15 to 1-8 with ten minutes remaining in the game. Worse was to follow for Rathpeacon when the Brian Dillons corner forward, Dave Whelan, scored a great goal in the twenty second minute to put his side 1-15 to 1-8 ahead which was the signal for Team Manager, Anthony O"Sullivan ,to empty the bench for the remainder of the game. A second Rathpeacon goal, with five minutes to go, left just four points between the teams but the issue was put beyond all doubt when Dave Whelan pounced for his second goal ,a minute later to give Brian Dillons victory on a 2-16 to 2-9 scoreline. Scorers for Brian Dillons were; Kevin Varian, 0-8 (0-4 frees); Dave Whelan, 2-0; James Horgan,0-4; Michael Colohan,0-3; and Tommy Boland,0-1; |
