The Brian Dillons and Na Piarsaighs second string Junior Hurling teams served up an exciting hours Hurling, when sharing the spoils in the City Division Junior (2) Hurling League game, played at Pairc Diolunaigh on Thursday evening, 20th June,2013. The final score was; Brian Dillons,3-12; Na Piarsaigh,2-15; The opening half of this game saw the Brian Dillons side, even though playing with the advantage of a stiff breeze, looking out of sorts and not playing with their usual fluency. After twenty minutes of play Na Piarsaigh had built up a lead of 2-3 to 0-3 and Brian Dillons looked in trouble. However, the switching of top scorer, Kevin Varian, who was totally out of the game in the half forward line, into the corner was quick to reap dividends. With his first ball collected in the corner , he duly finished to the net and he quickly followed with two excellent points from play. Those scores gave Brian Dillons a lifeline and at the interval ,Na Piarsaigh were only two points ahead, 2-4 to 1-5; The second half turned out to be a ding dong struggle with the lead changing hands on several occasions. Points were exchanged in the opening nine minutes, three to Na Piarsaigh and two to Brian Dillons, which left the score at 2-7 to 1-7 in Na Piarsaigh"s favour.. Then ,in the tenth minute of the second half, Brian Dillons were level when the brilliant Kevin Varian ran through the Na Piarsaigh defence to score a magnificent individual goal. A quick response to this setback from Na Piarsaigh resulted in a point....2-8 to 2-7. Brian Dillons were firing on all cylinders at this stage and when impressive substitute, Eric O"Donoghue, pointed to level matters once again, Cian Crowley sent a bullet to the back of the Na Piarsaigh net to put Brian Dillons in the lead, 3-8 to 2-8, after 15 minutes of the second half. A further point by Kevin Varian, who was now operating back out in the half forward line, had Brian Dillons four points ahead and looking good for victory. However, Na Piarsaigh had some quality forwards in their team and they put over four consecutive points in the next five minutes to tie the game once again, with ten minutes remaining. Eric O"Donoghue had his second point, a minute later, to give Brian Dillons back the lead...3-10 to 2-12. Exchanges were tremendously exciting at this stage of the game but three more consecutive points looked to swing it in Na Piarsaighs favour. as they were two points clear with just two minutes left in the game. Brian Dillons, however, were determined not to lose their unbeaten record in this years competition, and they attacked strongly in the dying embers of this thrilling game. A foul conceded by Na Piarsaigh saw Kevin Varian put the resultant free over the bar ,with just one minute remaining. From the puckout, Brian Dillons won possession and set up another attack which resulted in Eoin Hennessy being fouled twenty five metres out. Once again, Kevin Varian stepped up to the plate and sent the resultant free between the post to level up the scores, once again. The full time whistle sounded seconds later to leave the score at the finish, Brian Dillons, 3-12; Na Piarsaigh, 2-15; The Brian Dillons scorers were; Kevin Varian, 2-6 (0-3 frees); Cian Crowley,1-1; Eric O"Donoghue,0-2; Dylan O"Donoghue, Ken McCarthy and Stephen Kelly, 0-1 each. |
