At a bitterly cold and windswept Tank Field, on Wednesday evening, 8th May,2013, the Brian Dillons Junior (B) Footballers suffered their first defeat of the season, when they lost narrowly, 0-8 to 0-6, to Nemo Rangers, after a thrilling game, in the City Division Junior (2) Football League top of the table clash. On a night borrowed from the depths of winter, this game was always exciting and entertaining, even though the windy conditions made it extremely difficult for the players. Brian Dillons had the advantage of the breeze in the opening half and despite having plenty of opportunities, they squandered most of them and, at the interval they held a slender three point lead, 0-6 to 0-3, which did not look sufficient, considering they had to face the elements in the second -half. Nemo began the second half in sprightly fashion when they pointed in their very first attack with less than a minute gone and Brian Dillons looked set for a drubbing..However, the Brian Dillons players rose to the challenge and performed admirably for the remainder of the game. The defence, with Sean Goggin, Paul Horgan and Kevin Coughlan performing heroically, made it extremely difficult for the Nemo forwards to score while the forwards worked like beavers for scores but, they too were finding it hard to penetrate the Nemo defence.. Another blow for Brian Dillons was the loss of lionhearted midfielder, Danny Murphy, who had to retire injured, early in the second half, as he was controlling the centre field with his partner, Barry Triggs. Nemo had to wait until midway through the second-half for their next point and they were level, 0-6 to 0-6, a minute later. The closing quarter of the game provided some thrilling stuff with both sides chasing the elusive scores. Brian Dillons were presented with numerous scoring opportunities in the closing stages but, all to no avail and it was Nemo who snatched the spoils with two late points, one from a free and the other from a well taken forty five. Scorers for Brian Dillons were; Seanie O"Dwyer, 0-3 (frees); John Noonan, 0-2; and Kevin Varian,0-1; |
