The Brian Dillons Junior (B) Footballers recorded a narrow and most exciting victory over Ballyphehane in the City Division Junior (2) Football League ,in Pairc Diolunaigh, on Monday evening,16th July,2012. The final score read; Brian Dillons (B),2-8; Ballyphehane,1-10.
In what turned out to be a most competitive and thrilling encounter, Brian Dillons laid the foundations for this victory in the opening half hour when playing with the advantage of a stiff breeze. Their forwards, in particular, were in scintillating form with all six carving open the Ballyphehane defence on numerous occasions and their half-time score of 2-4 should have been more but for some great saves by the Ballyphehane netminder ,who prevented at least two more certain goals. The Brian Dillons goals in the opening half came from James Horgan and Tom Holohan. Ballyphehane were thrown a lifeline in the last minute of the first -half when they breached the Brian Dillons to score their only goal which left the half -time score reading; Brian Dillons,2-4; Ballyphehane,1-3.
The second -half was a thrilling affair as Ballyphehane, now playing with the advantage of the breeze, set about reducing the arrears. However, a resolute Brian Dillons defence, with goalkeeper, Seanie O"Dwyer in brilliant form, made it extremely difficult for the opposing forwards to get sufficient scores to put them into the lead. Anytime Ballyphehane looked poised to go ahead on the scoreboard, the Brian Dillons forwards kept adding the odd point which helped to keep them in the lead as the game entered the final three minutes..However, Ballyphehane did manage to get the levelling point, after 28 minutes play, and it looked,at that stage that the honours would be shared. The Brian Dillons side, however, displaying the same spirit as shown in their previous game with Whites Cross, had the final say when after a brilliant attacking movement which saw James Horgan handpass the ball to mid-fielder,Eamonn M cCarthy who calmly slotted over the match winning point in the 30th minute.
This victory further enhances Brian Dillons chances of reaching the semi-finals of this League while, next on the agenda for the side is the quarter-final of the City Division Junior (B) Football Championship against Passage, which takes place on Monday evening next,23rd July,2012,in Ballinlough with a 7.30pm throw-in.
The Brian Dillons scorers against Ballyphehane were; James Horgan,1-4 (0-2 frees);Tom Holohan,1-0; Dave O"Donoghue,0-1; Mark Buckley,0-1;Tommy Boland,0-1; and Eamonn McCarthy,0-1.
