The Brian Dillons Junior (B) Footballers completed their City Division Junior (2) Football League programme, with a 1-12 to 0-7 victory over Whites Cross, under the lights in Pairc Diolunaigh, on Wednesday evening, 16th October,2013. After playing twelve games in the competition, they have finished in third spot, with eighteen points, in the final League table and have qualified for a semi-final place in the knock out phase..Three important wins in the space of the last eight days was vital in their bid to qualify for the semi-final and great credit is due to the players for recovering their early season form and to the management team of Anthony O"Sullivan, Tom Browne and Tommy Boland for their efforts in rallying the troops in the past two weeks. A tentative start to the Whites Cross game saw Brian Dillons behind by a point after three minutes but, two minutes later, they were in the lead when wing back, Kevin Coughlan, was at the end of a great movement,to finish to the net for a super goal .However, Brian Dillons were not playing with the same fluency as they showed in their previous two victories over St.Finbarrs and St.Nicks. and it was Whites Cross who controlled the opening quarter of the game. Full marks to the Brian Dillons defenders, particularly Stephen Coughlan, who was in brilliant form, Paul Horgan and Andrew Murphy, who prevented Whites Cross from adding to their score during this stage of the game. The closing quarter of the first half saw Brian Dillons taking over with Danny Murphy and Mark Kelly in control at midfield and with some splendid points from Barry Triggs (three), Michael Peters (two) Dave Coughlan and Damian Horgan, who had replaced the injured Seanie O"Dwyer, they scorched into a 1-7 to 0-2 half-time lead. Brian Dillons continued to dominate the proceedings after the restart with points from Michael Peters (three),Dave Coughlan and Michael Colohan, from a free, pushed them into a 1-12 to 0-2 lead, with thirteen minutes remaining. Anthony O"Sullivan then, emptied the bench, and Brian Dillons seemed to lose their grip on the game in the final thirteen minutes. Whites Cross applied plenty of pressure on the Brian Dillons defence and were rewarded with five unanswered points and, but for the agility of John Shek,in the Brian Dillons goal, they could have well scored,at least two goals as well. A dodgy finish to the game for Brian Dillons, but, they had done enough earlier on and at the final whistle they had eight points to spare, 1-12 to 0-7. The Brian Dillons scorers were; Michael Peters, 0-5; Barry Triggs, 0-3;Kevin Coughlan,1-0; Dave Coughlan, 0-2; Damian Horgan, 0-1 and Michael Colohan, 0-1 (free). |
