Both second string Football squads of Brian Dillons and Mayfield served up an interesting and close tussle in the City Division Junior (2) Football League game , out in Mayfield on Sunday afternoon, 23rd February 2014, with the home team emerging narrow winners on a 1-8 to 0-8 scoreline..A first half goal,, scored after 13 minutes play, proved to be the decisive score as it enabled Mayfield to be on level terms at the interval after they had played against the blustery breeze. The game was a closely contested affair all through with defences ,on both sides, outstanding and making scoring extremely difficult for the opposing forwards. Mayfield opened the scoring with a point after six minutes even though playing into the teeth of a strong breeze. Two points, from placed balls, scored by Danny Murphy in the 9th and 11th minute pushed Brian Dillons ahead but they were rocked, two minutes later, when Mayfield goaled. Kevin Varian kicked two neat points to bring Brian Dillons back to parity and the exchanges were extremely keen , at this stage, with little or nothing between the sides. Mayfield regained the lead with a pointed free, two minutes before half -time but, one minute later, the sides were all square again thanks to a fine Kevin Coughlan point for Brian Dillons. The score at the interval was, Brian Dillons, 0-5; Mayfield, 1-2. The second half had Brian Dillons playing against the breeze but, however, they took the lead ,in the second minute , when Barry Triggs surged through the Mayfield defence to score a fine point. Mayfield, now with wind advantage, applied plenty of pressure on the Brian Dillons defence but were met with stern resistance, particularly from Stephen Coughlan, Eoin Hennessy and Andrew Murphy. However, four long range points had Mayfield ahead, 1-6 to 0-6, midway through the second half. The Brian Dillons side fought manfully to get back into the game with Danny Murphy, Barry Triggs, Dave Cremin and second half sub. Brian Manning being particularly prominent. Another Danny Murphy pointed free and another point from close range, which should have been a goal, from impressive Brian Manning had Brian Dillons trailing by a point with ten minutes remaining in the game. Two more wind assisted long range points ,in the closing five minutes, assured Mayfield of a hard earned victory. The Brian Dillons team can take encouragement from this performance as they were up against a strong Mayfield side who had just been relegated from the Junior (1) League and it is doubtful that Brian Dillons will meet a more stronger team in the remaining rounds of the competition. Scorers for Brian Dillons were;Danny Murphy ,0-3 (frees);Kevin Varian, 0-2; Kevin Coughlan, Barry Triggs and Brian Manning, 0-1 each. The Brian Dillons team lined out as follows; Tom Triggs; Stephen Coughlan; Paul Horgan; Eoin Hennessy; Andrew Murphy; James Murphy; James O"Shea; Danny Murphy; Darren McGrath; Michael Peters; Barry Triggs; Kevin Coughlan; Dave Cremin; Tommy Boland and Kevin Varian. Subs (all second half); Brian Manning for Kevin Varian; Ken McCarthy for Tommy Boland; Damian Horgan for Michael Peters ; Cian O"Callaghan for Eoin Hennessy and John Shek for Tom Triggs; |
