With only seven days to their Championship quarter-final clash with Na Piarsaigh, the Brian Dillons Junior (A) Hurlers produced an untypical well below par performance when beating Glen Rovers, 1-19 to 1-15, in the City Division Junior (1) Hurling League , which was played in Pairc Diolunaigh on Wednesday evening, 30th July, 2014. This victory pushes Brian Dillons further ahead at the top of the League Table with ten wins from the ten games played, but, the lack lustre display must be a cause of concern for the Team Management with the Championship looming. Lining out without Darragh Brosnan (on duty with the Cork under-21"s), Danny Murphy, Daniel McCormick, Cillian Brosnan, Cian McCarthy and Philip O"Brien, Brian Dillons were still able to field a reasonably strong fifteen and were expected to win comfortably. However, it did not turn out that way as they struggled for most parts of the game against a dogged Glen Rovers side.. The opening twenty minutes saw Brian Dillons comfortably ease into a 1-10 to 0-3 lead with the goal coming off the stick of John Horgan , after Kevin Coughlan"s piledriver had been brilliantly saved by the Glen "keeper..The Glen breached the Brian Dillons defence, two minutes later, for a goal of their own and from that stage on, Brian Dillons were not impressive. At half-time, Brian Dillons led by 1-12 to 1-6. The second half saw Brian Dillons continue to struggle. with the Glen matching them point for point. and it became increasingly uncomfortable for Dillons when they only led by three points, 1-18 to 1-15, with four minutes remaining. However, they weathered the storm and a John Horgan pointed free, closed the scoring, leaving Brian Dillons four point winners...1-19 to 1-15. A vast improved performance is required ,if Brian Dillons are to overcome the Na Piarsaigh challenge in the Championship quarter-final, which is fixed for Ballinlough, on Wednesday, 6th August (Throw-in at 7.15pm ) Scorers for Brian Dillons were; John Horgan, 1-5 (0-4 frees); Tomas Lawrence, 0-5; Kevin Coughlan, 0-3; John Noonan,0-2;Darragh Rodgers,(free), Keith McCormick.
