The Brian Dillons Junior (A) Hurlers cruised into the City Division Junior (1)Hurling League final with an emphatic , 2-20 to 0-3, victory over Mayfield ,after a most one-sided semi-final, which was played in Ballinlough on Sunday morning, 27th October, 2013. Played amidst frequent torrential showers and with a gale force wind blowing throughout, Brian Dillons were in control of this game from the throw-in. The inclusion of Cian McCarthy, Brian Barrett and Cillian Brosnan who were unavailable for the previous weeks McCurtain Cup game ,with St.Vincents, made a huge difference to the Brian Dillons forward division, which looked particularly sharp on this occasion. The Brian Dillons defence was, once again, soundness personified, only conceding three points in the opening half when facing the gale-force wind. and holding the Mayfield forwards scoreless for the entire second half. Mayfield played with the advantage of the strong breeze in the opening half and led for the only time ,in the entire game, when they pointed in the first minute. Two minutes later, John Noonan levelled for Brian Dillons with a fine point and, as the game progressed , it became obvious that Brian Dillons were in control. Their defence was dominant with James Murphy, Danny Murphy, Maurice Carey, Niall Fahy, Mark White and Darragh Brosnan making sure that goalkeeper, Andrew Murphy , was never really tested. Tomas Lawrence was in sparkling form at midfield with his partner, Keith McCormick, also putting in a good shift in this sector. Brian Barrett was fielding many of Andrew Murphys puckouts and was feeding his teammates with plenty of ball , in the opening half with the result that Brian Dillons went in at half-time leading by 0-7 to 0-3 ,even though they had played against the elements. The second half began with Brian Dillons, anxious to put the game beyond Mayfield, adding a point ,from Keith McCormick, in less than a minute and then, one minute later, Brian Barrett brilliantly finishing a Cillian Brosnan free to the net for a great goal. The remainder of the second half saw Brian Dillons adding a litany of scores while holding the Mayfield forwards scoreless for the entire half. Cillian Brosnan and Cian McCarthy really blossomed with some splendid points while the hard working, Philip O"Brien, although not getting on the scoresheet, contributed to many of his teammates scores. Kevin Coughlan finished the game in impressive form, when moved into full-forward,pilfering two fine points. The final nail in Mayfield"s coffin was applied by Cillian Brosnan when he billowed the back of the net for a smashing goal in the final minute of the game. Scorers for Brian Dillons were; Cillian Brosnan,1-7(0-4 frees, 0-2 "65s); Tomas Lawrence,0-4; Cian McCarthy,0-4; Brian Barrett, 1-0; Keith McCormick,0-2; Kevin Coughlan,0-2; and John Noonan,0-1 Brian Dillons will now meet the winners of the Blackrock and St.Vincents second semi-final in the City Division League final, while on next Friday evening, 1st November,2013,they meet Ballymartyle in the County Junior (A) Hurling League quarter-final, out in Pairc Diolunaigh, with a 7.30pm throw-in. 52222222222222 .3...333333333333333333333333333333333333333.....3333333 |
