Runners -up in last years competition, Brian Dillons, easily surmounted the first round of the 2014 City Division Junior (A) Football Championship ,as a result of a facile, 5-18 to 0-4, victory over St.Nicks, on Sunday morning, 11th May,2014, at Ballinlough. It was much too easy for Brian Dillons and they can expect much tougher games going forward. Still. they did what they had to do and some of their football against St.Nicks was certainly impressive. Playing with the advantage of the strong breeze , in the opening half, Brian Dillons began tentatively and at the end of the opening ten minutes they led by 0-4 to 0-1. It was 0-7 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes but, two minutes later, when Cillian Brosnan scored the first goal of his hat-trick, Brian Dillons began to perform much more comfortably and were in complete control for the remainder of the game.. Their second goal came two minutes from the break when a good run by Dave O"Leary saw him pass to Cillian Brosnan ,who, in turn, set up his brother, the inrushing ,Darragh, who duly billowed the back of the net. It was 2-10 to 0-2, in Brian Dillons favour, at half-time. Whatever hope that St.Nicks had of staging a comeback, when playing with the advantage of the breeze, in the second half, were well and truly shattered within four minutes of the restart. Goals from Cillian Brosnan, in the first and second minutes, and Dave O"Leary, in the fourth minute, pushed Brian Dillons ,5-10 to 0-2, ahead, and the game was done and dusted. In total control for the remainder of the game, the Brian Dillons Manager, Alan Whelan, and his fellow selectors, withdrew Cillian Brosnan, Colm O"Connor and Dave Cremin, as all three had began the game with niggling injuries.
