Great Second Half Comeback by Junior (A) Footballers Just Fails in Championship Final Replay.

posted 6 Oct 2013, 14:25 by Willie Horgan
As they did the previous week in the drawn game, the Brian Dillons  Junior (A) Footballers , trailing 1-8 to 0-4 at half -time, staged a remarkable second half recovery to come within one point of St.Finbarrs, but, however, the comeback just failed as the "Barrs added two late points to emerge winners of the City Division Junior (A) Football Championship Final replay on a 1-13 to 1-10 scoreline, at Ballinlough on Sunday morning, 6th October, 2013. So, the famine for a Junior (A) Football Championship title continues for Brian Dillons with the last title being won way back in 1998.
Although the comeback by Brian Dillons was heroic, they had left themselves a mountain to climb when they allowed St.Finbarrs to dominate the opening half and to build up an eight point half-time lead. Brian Dillons,in fact, made a bright opening to the game and ,after the "Barrs had the first point, Dillons raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead ,after twelve minutes, thanks to points from Cian McCarthy and John Horgan (two). For the remainder of this half, however, the "Barrs took over with their midfielders winning every kickout and their half back line completely snuffing out the Brian Dillons half forwards. After twenty one minutes play the "Barrs were leading by 0-5 to 0-3 and three minutes later they struck for their goal, which came about when Brian Dillons were most unlucky not to goal at the other end..A ball flew past the "Barrs "keeper only to strike the upright and bounce back into the netminders hands who started a counter attack which culminated with the "Barrs finishing to the net... 1-5 to 0-3. The Brian Dillons players appeared to be numbed after this score , allowing the "Barrs add three further points before the interval to which Darren McGrath pointed for Dillons....1-8 to 0-4 at half-time.
Brian Dillons began the second-half in determined fashion when midfielder, Darragh Brosnan, who proceeded to give a superb second -half performance, pointed in the opening minute. However, the "Barrs replied with three further points, two from frees to stretch their lead to nine points, 1-11 to 0-5, after five minutes of the second -half. It was at this stage that Brian Dillons took control of the game.  The Brosnan brothers began winning every ball ,at midfield. which put the "Barrs defence under severe pressure, and the scores began arriving for Brian Dillons..Points by Mark Buckley and Darragh Brosnan had Brian Dillons trailing, 1-11 to 0-7, after seven minutes of the second half.. Then ,three minutes later, when Darren McGrath was about to pull the trigger inside the "Barrs parallelogram, he had his leg hooked by a "Barrs defender which led to a penalty kick been awarded to Brian Dillons. As per usual, Cillian Brosnan expertly converted the penalty...1-11 to 1-7 with twenty minutes remaining.  Brian Dillons continued their supremacy with Tomas Lawrence most effective as a third midfielder and defenders, Mark Walsh, Niall Fahy and Chris Daly excelling, they continued their siege on the "Barrs defence. Points from John Horgan (free), Mark Walsh and Tomas Lawrence left them within a point adrift, 1-11 to 1-10, with thirteen minutes still left to play. The next few minutes more or less decided the game and, once again, Lady Luck turned her back on Brian Dillons. With John Horgan in possession ,one on one with the "Barrs "keeper, just as he was about to strike, he was pulled back by a defender, which forced his kick to hit the upright and was subsequently put out for a "45. The referee should have awarded a second penalty in this incident as John Horgan was clearly fouled when attempting to kick the ball., To make matters worse for Brian Dillons, the resultant "45 kick was sent wide. Sensing that the game was slipping away from them, St.Finbarrs, making a number of profitable substitutions, steadied the ship and succeeded in holding Brian Dillons scoreless in the final thirteen minutes of the game.. A pointed free, with three minutes remaining, put the "Barrs two up and they made victory certain when they had another point in the first minute of additional time.  The final whistle sounded one minute later and St.Finbarrs were winners, 1-13 to 1-10 after a tremendously exciting second -half.  Congratulations to St.Finbarrs on their victory but, bouquets also to Brian Dillons for their magnificent second -half comeback which however, just fell short.   Scorers for Brian Dillons were; John Horgan, 0-3 (0-2 frees); Cillian Brosnan, 1-0 (pen.);Darragh Brosnan,0-2; Cian McCarthy, Darren McGrath,Mark Buckley ,Mark Walsh and Tomas Lawrence ,0-1 each.  Team; (1) Paul McCarthy; (2) Dylan O"Donoghue;(3) Edmund Hussey;(4) Mark Walsh; (5) Niall Fahy; (6) Cian McCarthy; (7) Chris Daly; (8) Cillian Brosnan; (9) Darragh Brosnan; (10) Dave O "Donoghue; (11) Darren McGrath;(12) Dave O"Leary; (13)Mark Buckley; (14) John Horgan; (15) Tomas Lawrence;  Subs; Philip O"Brien for Dave O"Donoghue;(half-time); Shane Maher for Dave O"Leary (45 mins.); and John Noonan for Darren McGrath (54 mins.).
