Good Win for Junior (A) Footballers over Whites Cross in League Tie.

posted 17 Mar 2014, 15:11 by Willie Horgan
              Reigning Champions, Brian Dillons, recorded a good three point victory over Whites Cross in the City Division Junior (1) Football League at Whites Cross Ground ,on Saturday afternoon, 15th March, 2014.  The final score was, Brian Dillons, 0-8; Whites Cross, 0-5;
             Fielding without a number of first choice players, due to work commitments and injuries, Team Manager, Alan Whelan and his co-selectors, can feel well satisfied with this result as the Brian Dillons team performed with great maturity, even though, they allowed Whites Cross to come too close for comfort in the second half. Playing against the stiffish breeze in the opening half , on a lovely afternoon for a game, Brian Dillons dominated proceedings and were 0-6 to nil ahead at the interval.  Whites Cross rarely looked like scoring,in this half, due mainly to the outstanding defending of the Brian Dillons backs and the solid goal keeping of Tom Holohan. The Brian Dillons attack always looked dangerous in possession with the result that they were regularly fouled by the Whites Cross defence and were punished by the free taking of Cillian Brosnan ,who slotted over four points, from placed balls, during the first half. The other two points came from hard working midfielder, Chris Daly, after receiving a pass from Cillian Brosnan, and outstanding centre half back, Tomas Lawrence.
            With the wind in their favour, in the second half, you would have expected Brian Dillons to win comfortably , but, however, it did not turn out that way. Whether it was complacency or carelessness, Brian Dillons did not perform with the same authority as the first half and four points for Whites Cross, in the opening twelve minutes, left only two points between the sides.  Brian Dillons recovered their composure and regained control but wasted numerous scoring opportunities through wayward shooting, although Darren McGraths piledriver, which looked destined to end up in the back of the Whites Cross net, was unlucky to hit the underside of the crossbar. Two further points by Cillian Brosnan, one from a free, pushed Brian Dillons four ahead with ten minutes remaining, while Whites Cross pointed a free to leave just three points between the teams, with five minutes left on the clock. A spirited Whites Cross side tried manfully for the equalising goal in the dying minutes, but, were denied by the resolute Brian Dillons defence and ,particularly, goalkeeper, Tom Holohan, who brought off a number of first class saves. Too close for comfort in the end, but ,a satisfying win for Brian Dillons.
           Scorers for Brian Dillons were; Cillian Brosnan ,0-6 (0-5 frees); Chris Daly, 0-1; and Tomas Lawrence, 0-1;  The Brian Dillons team lined out as follows; Tom Holohan; James Murphy; Edmund Hussey; Michael Noonan; Niall Fahy; Tomas Lawrence; Tom Triggs; Chris Daly; Colm O"Connor; Kevin Coughlan; Cillian Brosnan; John Noonan; Mark Buckley; Darren McGrath; and Danny Murphy; Subs; Philip O"Brien for Mark Buckley; Martin Corbett for Danny Murphy.
