During the past week, we lost another of our loyal club members when Owen Ahern passed away, peacefully at home, on Thursday,24th July, 2014. Owen gave a lifetime of service to Brian Dillons and he will be sorely missed by our club. He played Hurling and Football with Brian Dillons, at under-15, under-16 and Minor level, from the early to late 1950"s, but, most of his work was done in a selectorial capacity for various teams during the 1960"s, 1970"s and 1980"s.. Owen was a valuable and wise selector on the Brian Dillons Junior (A) Hurling team which captured the City Division Junior (A) Hurling Championship, in 1965, after a 27 year lapse, and subsequently, were runners-up to Ballinhassig in the County final of that year. He, also, acted as a selector on numerous under-age winning teams throughout the years . Owen acted as delegate , for Brian Dillons, to the City Division Board for many years, where he diligently represented our club at the weekly Wednesday nights meetings. He was, also, highly efficient in raising finance for the club throughout his lifetime and his work in promoting our Weekly Members Lotto Draw was first class. In recent years he held the position of Chairman of our Juvenile Section. The huge attendance at Owen"s Removal and Burial ,in Kilcully Cemetery, was testament of the high esteem that he held. The attendance included numerous Brian Dillons players that played under Owen, down the decades, and members of other clubs within the City Division. We wish to tender our deepest sympathies to Owens daughter, Carol, sons, Brian and Dave and to his brothers, Con and Jim, as well as all other relatives. |
