In our first Minor 'A' league match of the season, Dillons travelled to play a strong SARS side but incredibly we came away with points. It wasn't just our skill that won the day but more importantly our attitude, our belief and our commitment to every tackle and every breaking ball for the full sixty minutes which is what impressed most. Moving up to Minor 'A' is daunting enough for us as we have a small squad but to play and beat a SARS team with several inter county players is a tremendous effort which will give us plenty of confidence going forward. The first score came from Dillons which was a point from Rachel. Then Shauna put over a point from the 45. We were outstanding all over the pitch but particularly in defence. Essie, Caroline and Shannyn were awesome. SARS scored two points, one from play and one from a 45 to level it. Then our youngest player Kate scored a fabulous goal with quick feet and a clinical finish. H.T score was 1-2 to 0-2. In truth we left goals behind us but were happy to be ahead. We wondered could we keep up the pace and intensity in the second half as we knew SARS would have a good spell at some point. Sure enough the first score was a rocket of a goal from SARS. We didn't panic and kept our composure. Shauna put over a 45 before SARS scored two points. Then the decisive score came from Lauren who used her pace to make space, struck the ball on the run which dropped in to the net over the keeper. SARS scored a point in the last few minutes to come within a point, and the question was, could we hold out for the win. It was never in doubt. We wanted it more, that's for sure. We won on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-5. We had so many great performaces it was hard to believe it was the opening match of the season. Shauna and Stephanie in midfield were superb. Young Siofra on goal and Molly at half forward looked full of confidence. A great start also for our new captain Deidre who with Niamh at full back were rock solid. This will a tough league for us but we have a great start with two points on the board. |
