Brian Dillons Intermediate team were defeated by SARS in the Championship Final held at Castle Road on September 27th. We were beaten by the better team on the day and congratulations to SARS who deserved their victory. Our girls showed grit and determination and they gave it everything. They left the field with their heads held high. We were chasing the game right from the off after SARS scored a goal in the first minute to take the momentum. We rallied and competed well all over the pitch. Caroline scored an inspirational free from our own half to get us on the score board. Our discipline was poor and we were punished by SARS who scored four points from frees. We made two changes brining on Sarah for Deirdre and Essie for Ruth. Caoimhe scored three points from frees to keep us in touch. H.T score was 1-7 to 0-4. We knew that we weren't playing to our potential and the team were encouraged to go out in the second half, be first to the ball and the scores will come. We had a great start to the second half. A great point from Caoimhe and a number of great saves from Shauna gave us confidence. Then Caoimhe scored a rocket of a goal from a 21 yard free. We were within two points of SARS and were looking good. Then, against the run of play the SARS corner forward found herself unmarked ten yards out and duly dispatched the ball to the back of the net. That killed us. We never recovered after that. We brought on Anthea for Caroline and Lauren for Therese. No matter how hard we tried we couldn't get back in to it. SARS put over a few classy points to see out the game. Final score 2-14 to 1-5. An exciting match played in the best of spirits. There was no shame in our performance and our club is very proud of this team. A special word of thanks to all our supporters who turned out in force. The team returned to the Tank for a meal and refreshments which was greatly appreciated and a million thanks to the committee for all their hard work. It's tough to take two final defeats in one season but we will learn from this experience and come back stronger. Nobody who ever gave their best regretted it. |
