Brian Dillons Intermediate team are county champions following victory over Tracton in the final at Castle Road. No one can take it away from us, we were deserved winners and without doubt the best team in the competition. We have showed consistency all season and have gone through the league and championship unbeaten which is a tremendous feat. This squad wanted this title so badly you wouldn't believe it, nothing was going to stop us. We prepared well, we are extremely fit and our attitude was spot on. We played against the wind in the first half and within two minutes Therese hit the back of the net with a great finish. Tracton put over a point after five minutes from play. Soon after Caoimhe got our second goal to put us in control. Then Tracton scored the next four points two from frees, a 45 and one from play. In the twenty ninth minute we got a penalty which Caoimhe duly dispatched. Tracton put over a free to make the score at H.T 3-0 to 0-6. We weren't at our best in the first half and we had stern words from Linda and Tomas at the break. The wind never won a game, that was the message. We needed to remain focused and to relax on the ball. Claire put over the first point in the second half which was a beauty. Tracton replied soon after with a point and were then awarded a penalty. We had practised this drill regularly and between Shauna and Niamh, it was saved, that was crucial. Jane came on for Therese at corner forward. Sinead put over a point just when we needed it. Ruth took one for the team and had to be replaced by Siofra. Tracton got a point from a free to stay within three points. Then we finished like champions with two points from Sinead and Caoimhe from a free. F.T score 3-4 to 0-8. We have played better but we never looked in trouble. Our defence was excellent, particularly Niamh, Emma and Amanda. Susan and Shauna worked their socks off as usual and Claire was excellent. The player of the match to Tractons Julianne Kinston who had a great game but our Shauna on goal could quite as easily got the award, she was superb. Wild celebrations followed with the massive support we had. We achieved what we set out to do, become county champions. Great credit to the players, the squad, coaches, mentors and the entire club. It's the munster championship next which is a new experience for us but we'll give it everything. The customary Garda escort brought a huge convoy to the Tank where celebrations are continuing. |
